Abstract
The generation of low-frequency current fluctuations in the ocean by variable winds is reconsidered. Observed spectral characteristics of the wind field over the ocean are discussed. A simplified analytical model is used to derive spectral properties of the oceanic response to broadband atmospheric forcing. The results qualitatively agree with a more realistic numerical model, and may help to explain some aspects of deep-sea current meter observations.
