Abstract
A series of waveguide-based photonic circuit elements, straight waveguides, waveguide bends, and waveguide tapers, fabricated in low index-contrast two-dimensional photonic crystals, are characterized. Increased coupling efficiency from ridge waveguides by use of ultrashort tapers, and enhanced bend efficiencies and bandwidths of modified waveguide bends are evident.
