Abstract

Fluid-body interaction of the pectoral fin of a manta ray is studied experimentally using a mechanical model consisting of an undulating flexible body replicating features of the fin. The evolution of the wake occurs in a manner that is distinct from wakes produced by nominally two-dimensional geometries. Details of the wake structures and their variation with non-dimensional frequency are discussed as well as implications for thrust production and propulsive efficiency.
