Abstract

The viscoelastic analysis of bead seals is compared with experimental results. Good agreement is demonstrated for cooling, heating, and isothermal holds. Different setting temperatures, Tsz and Tso, are shown to pertain to the axial and radial stresses, respectively. Simple formulas are presented with which the change of setting temperature with stiffness ratio, n, can be predicted. The Hull‐Burger equations with Ts=Ts(n) incorporated are shown to describe adequately the variation of stresses with the glass‐to‐metal diameter ratio in a bead seal.
