Abstract

The structure of the glass depends on its thermal history. Such behavior is dramatically illustrated in glass-to-metal seals, because small changes in the density of the glass cause large changes in the residual stress in the seal. In addition to structural relaxation, which controls the thermal expansion mismatch in the seal. The purpose of this chapter is to explain and quantify the influence of relaxation phenomena on the stresses in composites, such as seals.
