Abstract
We show that vertex operators for strings propagating in background fields are composite operators of anomalous dimension two in a two-dimensional field theory defined on a curved world-sheet. We show how special features of renormalization theory in curved spacetime are responsible for a number of peculiar features of string physics, including the need for apparently unphysical fields to maintain gauge invariance in string field theory.
