Abstract

A variational spectral method is developed for toroidal equilibria with imperfect flux surfaces. The method uses a representation of the magnetic field in terms of generalized flux coordinates which is predicted on the existence of a neighbouring field with perfect surfaces. Given that several variational spectral codes for three-dimensional toroidal equilibria with perfect surfaces already exist, it is argued that the present method may be implemented without much difficulty.
