Abstract

WOCl4 catalyzes dehydrative decarboxylation of 2,3-dihydroxycarboxylic acids to enols, likely via β-lactone intermediates. Classical reagents for conversion of 3-hydroxycarboxylic acids to β-lactones fail with these substrates.
