Abstract

The Bell Labs semiconductor group pioneered the research which led to discovery of the transistor effect on Dec. 16, 1947. This discovery eventually gave birth to the transistor which replaced unreliable vacuum tube amplifiers used in communications systems during the post-war era. Since then, a number of new transistor technologies have been developed. These include the VLSI circuit, the CMOS device, and the MOSFET device.
