Abstract

This book provides an up-to-date and advanced theoretical treatment of global seismology, describing the normal-mode, body-wave, and surface-wave methods employed in the determination of the Earth's three-dimensional internal structure and the source mechanisms of earthquakes. The subject is broken down into 16 chapters, the first one being a historical introduction to seismic research. The remaining 15 are divided into three sections, under the following headings; foundations; the spherical Earth, and the aspherical Earth.
