abstract = "We show that in QCD the instanton gas is unstable under collapse into a dense strong coupling phase. However, in the presence of color fields due to quarks, a dilute gas can coexist with the dense phase. This leads to a derivation, directly from QCD of a confining bag model of hadrons.",
