Abstract
This chapter discusses the retina's predictive capabilities and analyses the underlying circuit mechanisms. This provides the essential building blocks for understanding the more sophisticated predictions carried out in the rest of the brain. The chapter shows that retinal predictions are not carried out using the same kind of algorithms that an engineer might chose. The retina tends to use computational "tricks" that are good enough to achieve the desired result over a useful range of stimulus conditions, but which do not perfectly achieve the most general solution.
