Abstract
The heats of adsorption of sodium dodecyl sulphate at the air/water interface are calculated from the experimental data of part 1.6 These heats of adsorption are compared with the heats calculated from the free energies of formation of the double layer on the model of Derjaguin, Verwey and Overbeek. The serious discrepancies between measured and calculated heats are discussed in terms of ion-pair formation at the interface, and changes in energy of solvation of ions near a dielectric interface.
