Abstract

Estrogen enhances cognition under healthy and pathological conditions. In this issue of Neuron , Hokenson et al. ¹ describe findings that counter this view, demonstrating that high levels of brain estrogen during acute intense stress impair memory. This preview discusses their findings in context of stress-induced pathology and resilience.
