Abstract

I have reviewed the physiology and pathophysiology of the control of ventilation in health and disease, with the intent of helping clinicians gain insight into the role of the control of ventilation in disease without over-emphasizing the role and importance of the measurement of ventilatory drives. Although certain therapeutic responses can be measured by a change in ventilatory drives, it is probably not practical for most laboratories to make precise quantitative measurements, but all clinicians should have a thorough understanding of the role of the control of ventilation in health and disease.
