The synthesis of micro-crystalline poly(ethylene-butene) (PEB) random copolymers with hydroxylic side-groups (PEB-OH) was presented. The effects of PEB-OH on yield stresses of crude oils, on the crystallization of long chain paraffins and on the precipitation of asphaltenes in crude oils were studied. A comparison between PEB with and without hydroxylic side-groups was presented. PEB-OH could decrease the size of asphaltenes and thus yield stresses of crude oils more efficiently due to the interactions between hydroxyl groups and polar groups in asphaltenes. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the 228th ACS National Meeting (Philadelphia, PA 8/22-26/2004).
