Abstract

The synthesis of micro-crystalline poly(ethylene-butene) (PEB) random copolymers with hydroxylic side-groups (PEB-OH) was presented. The effects of PEB-OH on yield stresses of crude oils, on the crystallization of long chain paraffins and on the precipitation of asphaltenes in crude oils were studied. A comparison between PEB with and without hydroxylic side-groups was presented. PEB-OH could decrease the size of asphaltenes and thus yield stresses of crude oils more efficiently due to the interactions between hydroxyl groups and polar groups in asphaltenes.
