note = "Funding Information: the wavelengths around 7 .3 µm reaching laser threshold first. As the current is increased a broader and broader range of wavelengths is brought above threshold; at 8 A peak current, a continuous Fabry-Perot spectrum from 6-8 µm is established. At higher currents, this spectrum remains broadband and continuous throughout up to the highest peak currents available to us ( 13 A) . Figure 3, finally, shows the light output and voltage versus current characteristics of a 12 µm wide and 2.25 mm long laser for several heat sink temperatures between cryogenic temperature and room temperature. We measure a peak optical power of more than 1.3 W and a maximum slope efficiency of 350 mW/A. The threshold current density increased from 4 kA/cm2 at 10 K heat sink temperature to 16 kA/cm2 at room temperature.
