Heritage structures are culturally significant because they provide documentation of engineering feats and link current generations to those of the past. Thus, these structures are worthy of preservation and ongoing assessment. This work aims to acknowledge the benefits of utilizing Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) throughout the life cycle of preserved buildings. This work uses a case study of the Morris Island Lighthouse in Charleston, SC to develop a workflow for the preservation of historic structures in four parts: (1) data collection, (2) analysis, (3) recommendations, and (4) preservation intervention. This workflow demonstrates how SHM fits into the broader aims of an ongoing preservation project. In particular, the case study shows how monitoring the structure at discrete points can be used to assess the health of the lighthouse's masonry tower as a whole. The results of SHM are complimented by Distinct Element Modeling results and compared with current documentation to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the structure's behavior. The lighthouse case study is an example of successfully integrating SHM into a preservation project such that the health of the structure can directly inform recommendations for preservation intervention.
