Abstract

Interest in materials which can incorporate lithium atoms into their crystal structures at ambient temperature has been stimulated by their potential use as the positive electrode in rechargeable batteries. Ambient temperature lithium insertion reactions form the basis for a type of high energy density secondary battery currently under study. This paper briefly describes the transition metal oxide host structure types known to undergo lithium insertion reactions and describes the important structural features which influence properties such as the rate of the insertion reaction and the capacity.
