Abstract

Radial variation in thermal expansion coefficient causes thermal stresses in optical waveguides which may be great enough to alter significantly the refractive index profile. This paper discusses methods of calculating these stresses, using elastic and viscoelastic models, and illustrates the magnitude of the resulting index changes.
