Abstract

By using a hamiltonian formulation we develop a consistent set of equations for the motion of electrons in the field produced by radiation and the wiggler. We treat the coupled electron-field equations in the linear and high-gain regimes, both analytically and numerically, and investigate the start-up of the free electron laser from noise. Comparison with previous theories shows that the differences in lethargy times and gains can be as large as 30%.
