Abstract
A system which includes a solid state electrochemical cell has been used to study the complex behavior of a vanadium phosphate (VPO) catalyst during butene oxidation. Under reaction conditions of high temperature (750 K) and near-atmosphere pressure, the open circuit voltage of the cell is indicative of the oxygen activity in the catalyst. It was found that as the relative degree of reduction of the catalyst increased, the selectivity to partial oxidation products also increased, while catalytic activity decreased.
