Abstract

A simplified model for a two-stage flame with arbitrary stoichiometries for each stage has been developed and employed to predict the droplet burning rate of mixtures of hydrocarbon and chlorinated hydrocarbon droplets with high Cl/H ratios burning in a hot oxidizing environment. It is shown that the sharp drop in the burning rate for tetrachlorocthane/nonane mixtures with Cl/H around unity observed in previous experiments can be attributed to the two-stage structure of the flame caused by the inhibition of CO oxidation and by the lower heat release associated with incomplete oxidation at the first stage.
