Abstract
A sideband-difference multiple access (SDMA) lightwave network is proposed. An external modulation unit is designed to perform an optical double-sideband suppressed-carrier microwave frequency translation. The address and data information are encoded in the spacing between these two frequencies. Using this approach, the usual problems caused by laser sources in conventional frequency-division multiple access systems are avoided. The performance of this system is analysed.
