Abstract
This chapter presents a holistic approach to structural health monitoring (SHM) for historic structures, with a focus on the unique challenges and considerations inherent in preserving architectural heritage. The study integrates traditional conservation principles with modern monitoring technologies, emphasizing the balance between preservation needs and structural assessment requirements. A comprehensive overview of nondestructive evaluation techniques, including both contact and noncontact methods such as GPR, infrared thermography, and laser scanning, is provided. The chapter outlines key components of a successful SHM plan, highlighting the critical role of historical research, the integration of low-tech and advanced monitoring techniques, and the importance of stakeholder involvement. The intervention matrix is introduced as a decision-making tool for evaluating SHM methods. A case study of the Morris Island Lighthouse in Charleston, South Carolina, illustrates the practical application of these concepts, demonstrating a replicable workflow for SHM in historic preservation projects. The research aligns with ISCARSAH guidelines, emphasizing the balance between preserving heritage values and ensuring structural safety. Designed to serve both students and practitioners, the chapter provides theoretical understanding alongside actionable insights, addressing challenges such as complex degradation mechanisms and lack of original documentation. It concludes by discussing future directions in historical SHM, including AI applications and data management challenges.
