N2 - The shortcomings of previous proposals for optical N × N time-division switches (TDSs) are discussed. A novel TDS implementation that avoids some of these problems is presented. It consists of a high-speed serial-to-parallel demultiplexer, which serves as a write gate, and a bank of programmable optical delays, which are used as memory elements. The operation of the switch is described, and its advantage are discussed.
