Abstract
We have determined the dynamical conductivity (k,) of the two-dimensional (2D) electrons in extremely high-mobility GaAs/Al1-xGaxAs heterostructures by measuring the attenuation and velocity of surface acoustic waves. In the small-filling-factor limit we find a broad conductivity resonance indicating a pinning mode of the 2D electron system, which has condensed into an ordered phase. Surprisingly, the data suggest a relatively small correlation length even in these high-quality systems.
