N2 - The Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice is - or at least was, until recently - the nation's premier agency for upholding statutory and constitutional rights against discrimination. Often dubbed the "crown jewel"of the Justice Department, the Division has a storied history of shaping the law and setting a national civil rights agenda, bringing landmark cases that have opened schoolhouse doors, created economic opportunities for the disadvantaged, reformed policing practices, and guaranteed the right to vote [4, 11, 13].
