In the appraisal of historians over the past thirty years, "Republican China" has transformed from a chaotic interval wedged between the demise of the imperial system and the rise of the Communist state to a pivotal era that laid the foundation for modern China. With access to new archives and an explosive proliferation of other source materials, the early decades of the twentieth century have attracted much scholarly attention. Most recently, as we increasingly look to connect the Republic to the late Qing and/or the early PRC, the boundaries of this field have stretched expansively, such that it no longer make senses to think of "Republican China" as a discrete period, but one inextricably linked to significant developments in modern Chinese history.
