SERGIO VERDU [F] ([email protected]) is a professor of electrical engineering at Princeton University. He is active in the fields of information theory and multiuser communications. In the 1980s he pioneered the technology of multiuser detection, which exploits the structure of multi-access interference in order to increase the capacity of multiuser communication systems such as those in cellular wireless telephony. His book on this subject was published in 1998 by Cambridge University Press. His work on information theory explores the fundamental limits of data transmission and compression systems. He is a recipient of the NSF Presidential Young Investigator Award, the IEEE Donald Fink article Award, and the 2002 Leonard G. Abraham Prize Award from the IEEE Communications Society. He served as Associate Editor for Shannon Theory of IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, and as Associate Editor for Networks of IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control. He served on the Board of Governors of the Information Theory Society 1989–1999, and was President of the Society in 1997. He has held visiting appointments at Australian National University, Tech-nion-Israel Institute of Technology, the University of Tokyo, the University of California, Berkeley, and the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute, Berkeley.

N2 - This article gives a brief overview of recent results on the limits of reliable communication in the low-power wideband regime from the stand-point of information theory. Results on channel capacity and optimum signaling are reviewed for both point-to-point channels and multiuser channels.
