Abstract

Real-time MPEG decoding of video streams at 30 frames/s with a software decoder has been achieved by a synergistic combination of algorithm enhancements, software tuning, PA-RISC processor multimedia enhancements, combining video and graphics support for color conversions and color compression, and system tuning. The PA-RISC multimedia enhancements allow parallel processing of pixels in the standard integer data path at an insignificant addition to the silicon area. The total area used is less than 0.2% of the PA 7100LC processor chip with no impact on cycle time or the control complexity.
