Rates of release of PAHs from DNAPL mixtures

Abstract

Knowledge of the rates of release of constituent compounds from dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) mixtures can greatly facilitate predictions of environmental impact and evaluation of appropriate water-based remediation technologies. Polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) comprise a significant class of constituent components of coal tar and creosote DNAPLs. This study addresses the mass transfer of such compounds from synthetic mixtures designed to serve as well-defined models for coal tars and creosotes. Mass transfer measurements were conducted in a reactor system designed to provide a known and constant interface between two internally well-mixed phases. Experimentally determined equilibrium aqueous phase concentrations were typically found to be within a factor of two of those predicted by Raoult's law. Mass transfer coefficients having similar values were observed for all components of the DNAPLs studied, and no significant variations in the mass transfer coefficient of naphthalene were noted as the mole fraction of this compound was changed from one mixture to another.
