Quadrupole-induced resonant-particle transport in a pure electron plasma

Abstract

An axially invariant, transverse quadrupole field was applied to a pure electron plasma confined in a Malmberg-Penning trap. The properties of both the plasma shape and the transport were determined. Diffusion coefficients of order cm2/s were observed at resonance for a perturbation of only 0.020 G/cm.
