Abstract

The performance and plume divergence of the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) 1 kW segmented electrode Hall thruster were measured at The Aerospace Corporation using two electrode configurations similar to those which demonstrated substantial plume divergence reduction in testing at PPPL. Comparison to a baseline configuration in which electrodes were replaced by BN segments showed that the presence of electrodes increased the discharge current, reduced the propellant utilization efficiency, and led either to increased plume divergence or to reductions that were smaller than those observed at PPPL. Differences between testing at The Aerospace Corporation and PPPL are discussed which may account for the different results.
