Planar imaging in a mach 8 flow using sodium laser-induced fluorescence

Abstract

We report the use of sodium Laser-Induced Fluorescence (LIF) as a means to obtain planar images of mixing in hypersonic flow fields. Helium is used as a substitute for hydrogen for these studies, and is seeded with trace quantities of sodium. Initial experiments have been conducted with low mass flow rates of helium injected into the boundary layer and observed with planar laser-induced fluorescence. Images in the streamwise and plan view directions are taken at the 10 Hz repetition rate of the excitation laser. We present here the design of the sodium seeding apparatus, as well as a discussion of diagnostic issues such as quenching, saturation, and chemical reaction.
