Abstract

The phonon spectrum due to random particle motion in a plasma crystal was measured. The crystal was made of negatively charged microspheres immersed in a plasma at a low gas pressure. It was found that the phonons obey a dispersion relation that assumed a Yukawa interparticle potential. Also, the wave energy measured in Fourier space was found to be approximately twice as large as the particle kinetic energy measured in configuration space.
