Abstract

Cardiovascular dysfunction is a cardinal manifestation of critical illness in children. Pediatric intensivists must have a solid understanding of the basic science and practice aspects of drugs used to treat these disorders. Therefore, a thorough understanding of cardiovascular pharmacology—including the indications, clinical effects, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, adverse reactions, and drug interactions—is essential to ensure optimal outcomes with minimal risk. This chapter offers an overview of the clinical pharmacology of the five catecholamines, two noncatecholamine agents, and the venerable cardiac glycosides most commonly used to support critically ill children..
