Abstract

The increase in Urbach energy Eo for decreasing x in a-SixC1-x:H is accounted for in terms of potential fluctuations in an alloy without site correlations. The influence of disorder on the optical gap Eg is determined by a convolutional procedure which extends a recent theory of DOS tails. We find Eg ≅ Ex - 1.3 Eo.
