On the accurate determination of flame speeds at normal and elevated pressures by using a spherical bomb: The Effects of compression and stretch

Abstract

The accuracy of flame speed measurement is important for the development of new kinetic mechanisms. The effects of compression and flame stretch on the accurate determination of flame speeds using spherical bombs are investigated. The results show that both compression wave and flame stretch have significant impacts on the accuracy of measured flame speeds. For the constant pressure spherical bomb experiments, a new correlation to obtain the compression corrected flame speed (CCFS) is presented. For the constant volume spherical bomb experiments, a method to obtain the stretch corrected flame speed (SCFS) at elevated pressures and temperatures is developed. The results show that the present methods can greatly improve the accuracy of the flame speed measurements and significantly extend the parameter range of experimental measurement.
