Abstract

Using the CLEO detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring we have observed the [Formula presented] ([Formula presented] ground state) in the decay [Formula presented]. We find a signal of [Formula presented] events. The probability that we have observed a background fluctuation is [Formula presented]. We measure [Formula presented] and [Formula presented]. This is the first statistically significant observation of an individual decay mode of the [Formula presented] in [Formula presented] annihilation and the first example of a baryon decaying via [Formula presented] emission, where no quarks from the first generation participate in the reaction.
