Abstract
This paper presents a numerical study of density and viscosity-influenced flow and solute transport in the unsaturated zone. To this end a one-dimensional finite element simulator has been developed to solve the density-dependent flow equation based on the mixed form of Richard's equation and the coupled transport equation. Several example simulations with chloride concentrations up to 15 pph have been carried out. Only in cases with nearly hydrostatic conditions is there a significant influence of density and viscosity changes. Also, the effects of viscosity changes are shown to be significant relative to the effects of density changes.
