Novel fixed-bed reactor for solid-acid catalyzed iso-paraffin alkylation

Abstract

The development of a fixed-bed reactor for solid acid alkylation process, which uses a novel residence time distribution along with dispersion enhancing devices to produce high-octane alkylate was described. This reactor does not require product recycle to ensure adequate catalyst lifetimes. Also this reactor produces high quality alkylate at modest feed P/O ratios. Macro and micro-mixing characteristics of this reactor have been verified using a cold flow model while the catalyst performance was verified using a bench-scale unit under commercially relevant process conditions.
