Abstract
This entry focuses on responses to two key sets of questions as they developed in the religious-philosophical context of early modern Europe. The first set of questions has to do with the relationship between God, the soul, and the body, and is broadly metaphysical. The other has to do with the sources of religion in reason and/or (special) revelation, and is more epistemological and at times political. Nine key figures are discussed: Descartes, Spinoza, Conway, Malebranche, Locke, Leibniz, Berkeley, Hume, and Kant.
