Abstract

A model of crystal growth that describes the phenomena on atomic length and diffusive time scales was presented. The model can also describe the statics and dynamics of a conserved field. A free energy that was minimized by a periodic hexagonal state was considered. The model was shown to be consistent with the predictions of Read and Shockley for grain boundary energy and Matthews and Blakeslee for misfit dislocations in epitaxial growth.
