Microbial chemical ecology in the human microbiome

Abstract

In the sections below, we will discuss small molecules that are produced by members of the human microbiome from four major human body sites: skin, vagina, mouth, and gut. Our focus is on molecules that have been shown to mediate important aspects of microbe-microbe ecological interactions, ranging from cooperation to competition (Fig. 1).
