Abstract

High beta experiments on PDX have indicated that an additional degradation in the global energy confinement time occurs during high power neutral beam injection with beta //Tq values above . 045. Evidence from fast charge exchange data and neutron emission suggests that this additional loss of confinement is due mainly to a rapid expulsion of the fast ions from the plasma. In order to detect and study the inferred flux of fast ions two additional diagnostics were added: a D** plus detector to measure the flux of escaping ions and a set of rf probes to investigate the possibility that rf instabilities were involved in the acceleration of beam ions above the injection energy.
