Abstract
Magnetostriction measurements provide a powerful tool for determining the deformation potentials and band structure in the extreme quantum limit in diamagnetic materials. The longitudinal magnetostriction of a highly oriented pyrolitic graphic sample has been measured along the c axis. The observed data were used for computing the deformation potential: D3(2)=( delta / delta e3) ln gamma 2. The numerical results are in good agreement with theoretical estimates and with other data obtained from pressure-dependent magnetoreflection experiments. It is also shown, for the first time, that the magnetic-energy levels derived from the McClure Hamiltonian are valid up to 14 T.
