Abstract
Recent progress that we have made on the problem of determining the macroscopic properties of random heterogeneous media from the microstructure is reviewed. A variety of different effective properties are considered, including the effective thermal (or electrical) conductivity and elastic moduli of composites, fluid permeability of porous media, and effective time scales associated with diffusion and reaction among traps. A unified approach to treat these seemingly disparate problems is emphasized.
