Abstract

Low temperature combustion plays a significant role in advanced engine and alternative fuel developments. This chapter provides an overview of the recent progresses in understanding low temperature combustion chemistries and low temperature flames (cool flame and warm flame) as well as their impacts on advanced engine and fuel design. Specifically, at first, the recent experimental and numerical research on the dynamics of premixed and non-premixed cool and warm flames are presented. Then, the low temperature combustion chemistry behind the cool and warm flames is analyzed at engine relevant conditions. Finally, the impacts of low temperature combustion on future advanced engines and fuel development are discussed.
