Abstract

Several liquids exhibit an apparent loss of tensile strength near their triple point. A thermodynamic analysis reveals a variety of unusual phenomena: a metastable transition with entropy discontinuity and continuous density, non-analytic density maxima, density anomalies near spinodal curves, and spinodal retracing.
